First publication of two very attractive works for three violins and b.c. by two of the foremost virtuoso violinists of their day, Thomas Baltzar and Nicola Matteis. This music has recently been praised in print by Dr Peter Holman, who has also recorded the Matteis and part of the Baltzar (Hyperion CDA66108, released in 1988) from private transcriptions.
'Mr Baltzar's Consort' -- really a Suite in C, with a very fine opening Pavan and Galliard -- seems to have begun a trend in England that culminated in Purcell's own wonderful contributions to the genre.
Matteis's [Divisions in D minor] are highly original and full of vitality.
