These works, all first editions as far as is known, next to the ripieno sonatas and concertos (qv), are perhaps the most unjustly neglected and least-well-known part of Telemann's instrumental works. The violin-overtures are all substantial works, with concerto-like soloistic episodes for the violin in the extended fugues in the French overture, and exquisite decorative solo writing in many of the dances. These are perfect for inclusion in any concert programme and, for professionals and recording companies, for a very attractive Telemann CD, ringing the changes on the same sequences of works that continue to be duplicated on recordings.
